Fasting has been practised for thousands of years in every part of the world for spiritual and health related benefits. In the past 100 years more scientific evidence has been collected to prove the immense value of fasting in the process of healing.
“I fast for greater physical and mental efficiency” -Plato (428-348 BC)
It is the ultimate most natural and safest way to detoxify the body, which has a direct effect on reversing and slowing down the aging process and achieving mental clarity, spiritual strength and balance.
Yoga also is an ancient system of self-development that works on all levels of our being with emphasis on keeping the body in good condition, as it is a vehicle of the soul.
The combination of fasting and yoga is ideal. Both disciplines address the body, mind and spirit at a very profound level and both use natural purification practices.
“Through fasting let the mind depend on its own power. Becoming detached from dependence on outer physical sources of bodily sustenance, the life force sees that it is supported from within.” Paramahansa Yogananda
Through regular fasting, all the organs of the body are at rest. The body gets a chance to heal and repair itself and most of all is able to prevent against “civilisation diseases”, e.g. High cholesterol, heart-problems, stress, diabetes, depression, obesity etc.
Dr. Otto Buchinger, who founded the first fasting clinic in Germany in 1920 says: “Fasting can be like an operation without surgery”…Today this is recognised all over the world and many people with chronic illnesses are being cured or at least alleviated by fasting.
The” Buchinger Fast” is like a low-calorie “fluid diet” The body is supplied with fresh fruit juices, vegetable juices, herbal teas and vegetable broths and of course good quality water. In that way the body is being boosted with Vitamins, trace elements and minerals. They nourish the body with live enzymes, which jump-start a sluggish immune system.
Great attention is also given to various eliminatory procedures; Colon cleansing, liver compress, dry skin brushing and massage, deep breathing (especially in fresh air and sunshine as the lungs are one of our biggest organs for eliminating toxic matters.)
These procedures can result in a very positive fasting experience with no feelings of hunger. Dr. Buchinger, also placed a lot of emphasis on the balance between rest and action to further maximise the regenerative healing powers of fasting.
Yoga Postures or Asanas are therefore very complimentary to fasting as they emphasise the importance of the rest and action principal. They also directly stimulate different systems in the body e.g. the digestive or lymphatic one, in order to remove toxins. The meditative nature of the yoga practice enhances the ‘Inner Journey ‘on the Self- Discovery path.
The fascinating self-help and self-empowering tools of Fasting and Yoga can help improve health issues, gain more vitality, and make us feel more vibrant and creative.
A wonderful sense of lightness and ease can be experienced, not just physically induced by loosing pounds, but also attained on all levels of our being! .
“Everyone has a physician inside him or her; we just have to help it in its work. The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well. Our food should be our Medicine. Our Medicine should be our food. But to eat when you are sick is to feed your sickness.” –Hippocrates
